A Peaceful Retreat in a Rural Idyll
History of the Cottage
One of the most beautiful unspoilt areas in the UK, the Scottish Borders has a population of around 100,000 in an area of 1,800 square miles. Our cottage offers a delightful place to stay and relax, and is a superb base for exploring rural Border towns nearby. Lovers of nature will not be disappointed - the farm is situated in a designated area of outstanding natural beauty and boasts three small marshes of considerable botanical and entomological interest that are classed as SSSI (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) Nature Reserves by Nature Scot, in addition to numerous species of birdlife.
Nether Whitlaw Cottage is the upgraded former farm worker's cottage on the farm, situated in extensive grounds well away from other buildings and over half a mile from the nearest public road. Nether Whitlaw is an upland stock farm with grazing for sheep and cattle, standing in the middle of an area of outstanding natural beauty.
The farm is an ideal base for touring the Borders, walking, fishing, horse riding, golf, birdwatching, wildlife, visiting the four Borders abbeys, stately homes, and Roman archaeological sites, or just relaxing with a good book in front an open fire. Edinburgh is just over an hour's drive away with an excellent choice of restaurants, history, culture and shopping.
The cottage was originally much smaller and was home to a farm worker and his family of seven children in the early 1900's. In 1954 the property was extended and modernised, and has continued to be since.
Living Areas
The cottage is furnished to a high standard and offers comfortable accommodation amid beautiful scenery.
Kitchen
The dining kitchen is well equipped with modern electric cooker, microwave oven, dishwasher and fridge freezer. There is a full range of crockery, cutlery, glasses and cookware. Double doors from the kitchen lead to the front garden.
Bedrooms
The holiday cottage is furnished to a high standard and offers the following guest accommodation:
- a double en-suite bedroom on the ground floor
- one large king sized bedroom upstairs
- one large twin room upstairs
- a third single bed can be made available by arrangement in the twin room
All beds have pillows and modern non-feather duvets. Bed linen is included in the rent. The king sized and double beds each have king size duvets. There are extra blankets available on demand.
The ensuite bedroom is downstairs with a double bed, cupboard with hanging space for clothes and a dressing table. This lovely en-suite has a power shower, WC, wash hand basin, shaver point and heated towel rail.
The twin room has twin beds, a wardrobe and chest of drawers.
The other upstairs bedroom has a king sized bed, a wardrobe, chest of drawers. Both of these rooms enjoy lovely outlook and beautiful views over the fields to the Cheviots.
The upstairs bathroom features a power shower, WC and wash hand basin, shaver point and heated towel rail.
Garden Area
There is a large enclosed area of garden ground and woodland for the exclusive use of anyone renting the cottage. Garden furniture is included and there is a small garage. The views from the cottage stretch over the Cheviot Hills and the Border Country - truly unforgettable.
